FALL 2016 BEAUTY LOOKBOOK

Dear Megan,

What’s going to be new in beauty this fall?

– Katy M.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! No, not Christmas, but FALL! September 1 is the new September 22 this year (thanks, Starbucks). Hot apple cider, football, leaf piles, your makeup no longer melting off the second you step outside. And best of all, fall beauty!

I love a bold, berry lip and warm neutral eyeshadow, so I really love this time of year. Every fall cosmetic companies really go all out with their products. Here is a sneak peak at the hottest trends and products coming to you Fall of 2016. Hold on to those Pumpkin Spice Lattes – thanks to the quickly evolving digital space, this year has been totally nutso in beauty.

MULTIFUNCTIONAL BEAUTY PRODUCTS

One of the biggest trends this fall will be beauty products that have more than one purpose. First we have Bite Beauty’s Multistick ($24 at Sephora). Available in 18 shades this bad boy can be used as a cream shadow, blush, or lipstick. There are even a couple shades that you could use as a cream contour depending on your skin tone. If you’re down for the highlight – especially the multi-functional, glowing, easy-on-the-go highlight – MILK has got you covered with their coveted galactic highlighter stick ($28 at Sephora), as well a range of other easy, on-the-go, multi-functional beauty products. We also have the Nars Sculpting Multiple Duo ($39 at Sephora), which is available in 3 combinations of Nars best selling shades. They can not only be used to contour and highlight, but also as a lipstick or cream shadow.

Perks of having a product with multiple functions: more money for a daily Starbucks run! (That wasn’t a joke).

GOTHIC LIPSTICK

A berry or oxblood lip is a fall beauty staple- but this year be prepared to go to the dark side! Think blacks, deep purple, and brown toned reds. At NYFW you couldn’t go to a show without seeing models strutting down the runway wearing this bold lip look. Nothing makes a statement more than black lipstick, which I foresee beauty lovers rocking for the majority of October.

OR RATHER.. EVERY SHADE OF LIPPIE

Lipstick is just sooo hot right now. It doesn’t matter if you’re wearing lilac, olive, black or even sky blue(!).. it’s in right now.

Urban Decay is about to launch their vice lipstick palette — or rather two palettes called Junkie and Blackmail — which holds all 120 of their vice shades (see in Allure).

NYX also just announced their holiday set of 24 mini-sized Suede Cream Liquid Lipsticks for $50, and it is to die for. That’s just about every shade of the rainbow, at just over $2 a pop. You can enter for your chance to win here (I know I did!)

GLOSSY LIPS ARE FINALLY BACK

And finally, on the topic of lippies – matte is (sort of) on it’s way out, and glossy is back in. Thank god, because my lips were so dry all summer just looking at those matte liquid lipstick photos on instagram.

Like it’s cousin contouring, it’s had a moment, but the 90s style is back and shining as hard as your super glossy lip.

Who better to lead the way on this trend than Anastasia Beverly Hills (with the help of the fab makeup artist Norvina, of course)? They announced their $28 fall gloss set 3 days ago on instagram and it is fire.

See for yourself (below):

To snag a glossy lip on a budget, check out Colour Pop’s $6 Ultra Glossy lippies (here). The same parent company makes these lippies and Kylie Cosmetic’s lippies (she private labels with them), so do yourself a favor and save a little money.

METALLICS ARE SO HOT RIGHT NOW

And metallic lippies are definitely having a moment as well. I’m pretty sure I remember these from the late 90s, too?Kylie Cosmetics re-popularized metals earlier this summer, and everyone seems to be catching on.

Not just metallic lippies though.. metallic shadows (this collection from NYX is everything) and metallic nails are picking up speed. Everyone is turning up their beauty a few notches this fall”

RUSTY SHADOWS

It you told me a year ago that red-hued shadow palettes would be in style this year, I’d would’ve lost at least a hundred bucks betting against it. Every palette that’s dropped recently is full of little pans of rusty fall colored shadows, including Kylie Jenner’s recent Kyshadow drop during NYFW. We’ve heard that Kyshadows aren’t as highly pigmented as other company’s shadows – at least based on her swatches of them on Snapchat, which we did watch – but we have yet to try them. In any case, I guess reds and oranges are here to stay.. at least for 2016.

KOHL LINER

Bust out that kohl liner from high school, because this trend is back and better than ever (except maybe not the exact same one you used in high school…you should probably toss that one out and buy a new one). One of the most popular eye techniques used on the runway this year was rimming the entire waterline with a kohl pencil, and smoking it out. Bonus points if you add a little shimmer to give it an almost wet look.

A wet, glossy, smoky eye. Sounds complicated, but looks awesome. Think of the makeup you wore in your high school yearbook photo- and just refine it a bit. The 90’s are back!

Here’s a how-to if you’re interested in creating this top model glossy smoky eye look.

GLITTER! GLITTER EVERYWHERE!

Glitter lovers, your time has finally come.

Glitter eyeshadow is having a massive moment – Thank you Pat, McGrath! – which will extend well into fall. The best way to rock this trend is by investing in highly pigmented, foiled shadows like these from Makeup Geek. Go with golds, silvers, and champagnes if you like to play it safe. If you prefer to spice things up a bit, try a bronze or cranberry color.

Glitter EVERYWHERE!!

STEP AWAY FROM THE CONTOUR

Contouring is dead. At least – that’s what we gathered from fall fashion week. None of the models had the heavily sculpted cheekbones that we are used to seeing. Instead, makeup artists are putting the emphasis on highlight, blush, and glowy skin. This can still emphasize your features, but in a much less dramatic way, like Josephine Skriver at NYFW:

CONCLUSION: FALL 2016 BEAUTY LOOKBOOK

The weirdest thing about beauty this year is that there’s so many trends.. there’s almost NOT a trend. The trend is throwbacks and highlighting your individuality through your look.. which is awesome! You literally can’t go wrong with just being yourself.
