A New Normal in Beauty

With vaccinations, mask mandates lowered, many returning to work and warm weather we are all entering our “new normal”. The reality is the pandemic has changed the world around us and ourselves forever. So what has changed relative to beauty?

We are all Beautiful

The pandemic has taught us all about our differences but most importantly our similarities. What we all learned from COVID is that beauty is more than your outer looks, it’s also about your soul and how you live your life. That being said, we have finally come to embrace uniqueness relative to beauty. We are all different and that’s what makes us attractive. Gone are the days of worrying about our hair texture, eye shape, skin color, nose shape, face shape … the list goes on. Bottom line, just be you! If you have long kinky hair and have straightened it for years you likely stopped. If you have greying hair you may have stopped coloring it and if you took hours putting on makeup you definitely stopped that as well. As a woman, I have to say this break from unrealistic cookie cutter expectations has been refreshing and well needed. Embracing our unique features is now the foundation of defining beauty. Of equal importance is our spirit and intention. Forever changed; women and society will continue to embrace individual natural beauty.

Less is More

Instagram and YouTube have lead us to a place where the only way to be recognized is to do more. This need for views has brought us layers of makeup, outrageous behavior and dramatic makeup designs. Let’s face it, during COVID we did not care what the newest neon eye shadow was. Influencers and the commercial machine behind them was placed on pause and what we learned was that less of everything (including beauty regime) is more. With masks, not having to worry about your lip color every day and/or not having to do your full face everyday has allowed us to focus on key parts of our faces like eyes. Focusing on your key assets vs your everything saves, time, money and often yields a more natural/youthful look. Additionally, major C-changes have emerged like dual duty beauty products, an awareness and appreciation of facial oils, do it your self beauty solutions and an increased focus on organic and natural ingredients.

Skin Health is Vital

Since we’ve been wearing no makeup or very little we have learned that skin health is the most important part of any beauty regime. Plant based skincare, Skinimalism and Clean and transparent skincare top the list of trends as predicted by real simple. Stripping down and getting to basics with skincare is going to continue through the summer. Less makeup is typically worn during summer months anyway so it’s the perfect time to nurture your skin. SPF, tinted moisturizer, facial oils (for that glow) and lighter makeup or tints may be all you need. If you want more ideas check out Allure summer skin tips from dermatologists.

In summary, women now have the chance to redefine beauty standards as well as expectations. So, let your hair dry naturally, skip the makeup and let your spirit shine.
