Why Rose Oil is Awesome For Your Skin (+ The Best Rose Products to Snag!)

“Extracts of this delicate flower may be used on all skin types but are often included in products for dry, sensitive, and mature skin” (source). Rose oil is a luxurious, and highly beneficial ingredient that can leave your skin feeling as soft as…well, a flower petal.

What’s the Deal with Rose Oil?

Did you know that it takes thousands of rose blossoms to get just one ounce of rose oil?  Because of this, rose oil is one of the most expensive essential oils on the market. Thankfully you only need a few drops to reap its benefits.

Containing a large array of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, rose essential oil has excellent emollient properties for moisturizing dry skin and also offers antiseptic and astringent properties to help treat acne! It contains anti-inflammatory properties that can help treat redness and inflammation. Rose oil can help refine skin texture, by controlling skin diseases such as psoriasis and atopic dermatitis. A study has even shown that rose essential oil can help heal wounds! Inhaling it (using an oil diffuser) inhibits water loss in the skin and lowers the concentration of cortisol (a stress hormone) in the body. (source)

Rose oil has both beauty and brawn! It is a powerhouse addition to any skincare routine.  recent study showed that rose and lavender oils can help treat anxiety and depression in postpartum women; while rose oil specifically has been shown to have a positive effect in treating depression.

Best Products with Rose Oil

Ready to see if a rose by any other name really smells as sweet? Here are some of my favorite products with rose oil!

1. Fresh Rose Deep Hydration Face Cream

If you’re looking for that all-around perfect moisturizer that can be used on any skin type and lasts for 24 hours, give this one a try! This cream is infused with real roses, claiming to make your face as smooth as a petal. (source)

2. Glossier’s Milky Jelly Cleanser

This face cleanser is the gentlest, end-all-be-all for gentle cleansers. It smells deliciously (and decisively) of rose damascena, and is made to remove makeup, oil, grime and all. Perfect for all skin types.

3. Peter Thomas Roth Rose Stem Cell Bio-Repair Gel Mask

A recent addition to my beauty regimen, the Peter Thomas Roth Rose Stem Cell Bio-Repair Gel Mask is a gelée mask that uses “cutting-edge plant biotechnology isolates and replicates five perfect rose stem cells.” It’s hydrating, brightening, toning (what rose is typically used for), and claims to help with the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles (though via antioxidants, not stem cells, as plant stem cells cannot generate or regenerate human stem cells). Skin-repairing ingredients, anti-oxidants, anti-irritants and a great smell and skin feel make this product a very luxurious mask. You gotta love a good PTR mask.

4. Shiffa 1001 Roses Luxury Milk Bath

Ok..this one is definitely a (another) splurge, but if you’re willing to drop $150 on this bad boy you’ll be sure to reap the benefits of roses along with goat’s milk and patchouli. It’s incredibly soothing and will leave your skin feeling smooth and nourished.

5. Herbivore Rose Hibiscus Coconut Water Hydrating Face Mist

Perfect to use on those hot, muggy, summer days or when your skin is overly-dry from harsh winter winds. Spritz this all over your face to cool your skin and give it an extra boost of moisture. + OMG they have the CUTEST packaging (more Herbivore reviews coming soon!).

6. Amalie REWIND Organic Toning Oil

Okay you know we had to do it; we organically grow, harvest, extract and formulate every single drop of our REWIND face oil–part of our Farm to Face line. While honeysuckle oil leads the way in this potent anti-aging oil, rose damascena–extracted in natural brightener, organic pomegranate oil–is an important piece of the formulation. Plus, you don’t have to worry about the risk of sensitization, because we create our extracts using the Folk Method, not through steam distillation or supercritical C02 extraction.

What’s better yet is we don’t just tell you how awesome each ingredient is, we show you. We documented every single step of the process on the blog. Learn about how and why we harvested and included each ingredient in REWIND:HoneysuckleLavenderRoseSage & Spearmint.

Takeaways: Why Rose Oil is Great in Skincare

Whether your skin is dry, or you’re suffering from anxiety and depression, rose oil can help alleviate some of the symptoms associated with these ailments. Perhaps it’s time we all start looking at our skincare regimen through rose-colored glasses! (That’s the last of the rose puns, I promise.)
